Psychological services are not covered by OHIP. However, the services of a psychologist are covered by most extended health plans. You will be provided with a receipt that can be submitted to an insurer for reimbursement. Because different insurers offer different amounts and types of coverage, please be sure to find out in advance what your insurer offers and expects from you. For example, some insurance companies require a physician’s referral for psychological services. When insurance plans provide only limited coverage, receipts may be tax deductible for any remainder, with physician referral.
The duration of therapy depends on the nature of your concerns and your goals. In general, 6-12 sessions are recommended, although in some circumstances, a longer time spent in therapy is warranted. Depending on the situation, some benefit may be obtained in 3-6 sessions.
Please see the American Psychological Association website for the effectiveness of psychological therapy.
